Since our early days, this group of citizens has been at the bottom of the hierarchy of people who matter. More than a roof over their head, our shelter is a place that provides a sense of safety and security and surrounds women with support needed to work on the root problems that led to homelessness. Our Center for Women and Children is one of the few local shelters to welcome children. Poverty and housing instability are especially harmful during early childhood, often causing problems in school. Through classes at New Beginning Recovery, Fatima learned how to set boundaries and establish healthy relationships. Melaney Batiste is the New Beginning Recovery Manager and is responsible for the implementation and delivery of program and house guest-related services. She develops and manages relationships with social service providers to support New Beginning Recovery guests. Melaney is from Picayune, MS, and has lived in New Orleans since she attended Xavier University in Louisiana. Melaney was incarcerated in 2014 and dedicated her time inside to helping the ladies she met.
Services are targeted to address the needs of individuals with co-occurring disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), deaf or hard of hearing, HIV/AIDS, and mental illness. She has a scholarship and is attending Metro State University of Denver where she is working toward an RN degree. She lives downtown with her son and works part-time while attending college full-time. We offer FREE self-sufficiency programming to parenting teen moms.
